| Modern options for crib bedding are numerous. However, selecting attractive bedding that is actually safe for a baby is nearly impossible. I was faced with this dilemma while I was pregnant with my first child. As I spoke with other mothers, I realized safety was a common concern. Unfortunatley, finding beautiful bedding that also was safe proved to be a daunting task. Not one of the bumper pads fit securely. They had not been designed to keep an infant from slipping between the bumper pad and mattress. Furthermore, a baby could easily become entangled with the pad. This traditional design, however, seemed to be my only option. Faced with no alternitive, I purchased an attractive, yet potentially dangerous bedding ensemble for my newborn daughter. |

| As our daughter grew more active, she would occasionally become entangled with the bumper pad. Her arm would become stuck under the bumper and she would wake up crying. I tried removing the bumper, but she then hit the sides of her crib and her limbs easily protruded through the rails. This seemed even more dangerous. Finally, I replaced the bumper pad and was convinced I would have to live with this inconvenience. |

| Late one night, as a piercing scream rang through our dark, quiet house, we realized a solution must be found. As we entered our daughters room, we searched her crib frantically until we found her. Wedged in a corner of the crib, her tiny legs stuck under the bumper pad, she sat with her arms protruding through the rails. Thankfully, she was only shaken by the incident and had not sustained serious injury. |

| I immediately began searching for a solution. In doing so, I was horrified at what I discovered. Every year 30,000 infants are seriously injured in their cribs. Approximatley 90 babies die in their crib each year due to strangulation. My baby had nearly become a tragic statistic. I knew the design of the traditional bumper pad would have to be made safer.
